Being one of the birthstones of June we thought it would be fun to find out a little more about the Alexandrite and share it with all of you.
The Alexandrite was first discovered in the time of Imperial Russia, the very first stone is said to be unearthed in the 1830’s in the Ural Mountains of Russia. The old Imperial colours were red and green and therefore the stone was named after the Russian Czar Alexander II. The Alexandrite is an incredibly rare stone and at the time was only mined for Russian royalty and the elite. Even now the Alexandrite is usually only found in antique jewellery.
One of the most interesting things about the stone is it’s colour, this slightly alters with different sorts of light, which adds to the rarity of the gem.
The Alexandrite is also said to have regenerative power and can bring emotional and mental aspects into balance, to re enforce self esteem and enhance one’s ability to experience joy. It symbolizes health and longevity, and is also the stone for a 55th wedding anniversary.
