Halley’s Comet
For anyone that remembers Halley’s Comet passing over our great southern skies in 1986, it had a lasting impression on us all and is still talked about today.
In the same year a moment almost just as big occurred in the jewellery industry.
In a place called Lightning Ridge in New South Wales the largest rough black opal was unearthed on the 3rd of November and was named Halley’s Comet in commemoration of recent historical events.
This opal is the third largest gem grade black opal ever recorded but is the only one extant so is clearly the largest one in existence from the whole of Lightning Ridge Black Opal Field out of the whole of its history and even made it into the Guinness Book of Records in 1991.
The Opal weighs well over 2,000 carats and measures 100 x 66 x 63mm and is approximately the size of a grown mans clenched fist.
This opal has recently come up for sale and all bids over $500,000.00 will be considered.
